The flagships of healthcare initiatives for the Government of India are Ayushman Bharat, consisting of two major components: Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), providing health assurance, and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), creating the digital backbone for the country’s integrated health infrastructure.
The National Health Authority has, therefore, released official mobile applications with the aim of facilitating citizens ‘ access and management of services under these missions. For now, two major applications are at the forefront for the citizens: the ABHA App and the Ayushman App, also known as the PMJAY Beneficiary App.

ABHA App: Ayushman Bharat Health Account
The ABHA App, earlier known as the Health Records App, is the key application for citizens under ABDM.4 Its core function would be to create and manage the digital health record of an individual, thereby empowering the individual with ownership and control over his or her health data.
Key Features and Services of the ABHA App
- Creation of ABHA Address (Health ID)
o It facilitates the creation of one’s own unique, 14-digit Ayushman Bharat Health Account number and the easy-to-remember ABHA Address, such as username@abdm.
ABHA number is the identifier that links and threads the health records across the ABDM network to ensure that records are correctly attributed to the individual. - Health Record Management – Personal Health Records (PHR)
This application works as an electronic health locker to help connect, view, and manage one’s health record from different ABDM-compliant healthcare providers and facilities.
It provides access to digital health records, such as lab reports, prescriptions, discharge summaries, CoWIN vaccination certificates, and more. - Consent Management and Data Security
The consent-driven sharing of health records is a defining feature; the patients are always in charge of their data.
They can consent to and withdraw consent for sharing certain health records with registered doctors, health facilities, or health programs, for certain periods of time. They do this in order to ensure security, confidentiality, and privacy of personal health information. - KYC and Government Program Benefits
Users can link their 14-digit ABHA number and get KYC verified to access benefits arising out of the government health programs. - Rapid Registration
Ayushman App (PM-JAY Beneficiary App)
