The largest health coverage scheme in the world, introduced by the Government of India, is Ayushman Bharat Yojana and also called Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme was initiated as a part of the National Health Policy 2017, which has the intention of offering Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to all citizens of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the scheme on September 23, 2018, at Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Ayushman Bharat has resulted in a significant change in the healthcare system of India. It aims to give poor and vulnerable families hassle-free treatment in a hospital. The plan encompasses two major elements, namely Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) to avail all services, including simple and sophisticated care.

Primary Ayushman Bharat Yojana Objective

The primary goal of this plan is to offer millions of poor families in India free and cashless health insurance. With the scheme, medical care up to 5 lakh per family is offered at no cost to the family, irrespective of the level of the ailment.

The scheme also includes 107.4 million poor and vulnerable families (around 500 million people), which is the largest health protection scheme in the world. Families will be selected according to SECC 2011 statistics. The central and state governments share the cost of financing the scheme.

  • SC/ST communities.

Urban Beneficiaries
Individuals in the following occupations can apply:

  • In litter collectors, street people, and house helpers.
  • Shopkeepers, pedestrians, street vendors.
  • Employees in the construction industry (plumbers, painters, masons).
  • Gardeners, sanitation workers, Sweepers.
  • Drivers, conductors, rickshaw/e-rickshaw drivers.
  • Electricians, mechanics, store attendants, and delivery boys.

Application Procedure for Obtaining an Ayushman Card

Application Process to get an Ayushman Bharat card (PMJAY e-Card). The process is very simple and fully online. You can get your card through:

  • Nearest CSC Centre
  • Government/private hospital in the PMJAY list.
  • PMJAY website or UMANG app.
