The PMMVY is a flagship scheme under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, aimed at providing support to pregnant women and lactating mothers nationwide, particularly those from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Eligible women can receive maternity benefits for their first two living children, provided the second child is a girl. For the first child, the scheme disburses a maternity benefit of ₹5,000/- in two installments. Additionally, beneficiaries are entitled to a cash incentive under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), amounting to an average of ₹6,000/- post institutional delivery.
In the case of a second child being a girl, a benefit of ₹6,000/- is provided in a single installment following the birth. Miscarriage or stillbirth cases are treated as new cases for the provision of maternity benefits.
The revised guidelines of ‘Mission Shakti’, effective from April 1, 2022, aim to encourage positive societal change towards the girl child by offering an additional cash incentive for the birth of a second girl child. Consequently, the benefit of ₹6,000/- is extended in one installment for the second child, with the objective of enhancing the Sex Ratio at Birth and deterring female feticide.
In situations of miscarriage or stillbirth, the beneficiary retains eligibility for future pregnancies, being treated anew for any subsequent pregnancies.
