Shreyas Iyer on the Path to Recovery After Spleen Injury: “Feeling Better Every Day”
Indian cricketer and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has shared a positive update about his health following a serious injury that left fans deeply concerned. The 30-year-old batter, who suffered a ruptured spleen and damage to his rib cage during India’s third ODI against Australia, assured supporters that he is gradually recovering and feeling stronger each day.
Taking to his social media handles, Iyer wrote, “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better with every passing day.” His message came as a huge relief to fans and teammates, who had been anxiously following reports about his condition since the incident.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Iyer added, “I’m deeply touched by all the kind wishes, prayers, and messages of support I’ve received. It truly means the world to me. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”
Family to Join Him in Sydney
According to reports from PTI, Iyer’s family members will soon fly to Sydney, where the cricketer has been hospitalised since the injury. Their presence is expected to give him emotional strength as he continues his recovery journey far from home.
The update from Iyer follows an official statement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, confirming that he had been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Sydney hospital and is now in stable condition.
“The injury was identified quickly, and the internal bleeding was brought under control. Shreyas’s condition is now stable, though he continues to be closely monitored,” the BCCI said in its official release.
A follow-up scan conducted on October 28 also brought encouraging news, showing “significant improvement” in his internal condition. “Shreyas is on the road to recovery,” the board shared a positive outlook on his overall condition.
How the Injury Happened
The unfortunate incident occurred during the third ODI match against Australia, when Iyer attempted a difficult running catch to dismiss wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey off bowler Harshit Rana’s delivery. Though he managed to get close to the ball, the awkward fall after the attempt caused a severe impact on his left rib cage.
Initially, Iyer appeared to be in discomfort but was able to walk off the field with assistance from the team’s physio. However, within hours, his condition worsened—his vital parameters began to drop, and medical staff decided to rush him to a nearby hospital.
Subsequent medical tests revealed internal bleeding due to a laceration in the spleen, prompting doctors to admit him to the ICU for continuous monitoring and treatment. Thanks to the prompt action from the medical team and support staff, the internal bleeding was controlled swiftly, preventing further complications.
Recovery Timeline Still Uncertain
At first, early medical assessments suggested that Iyer might return to action within three weeks, but more recent evaluations indicate that his recovery could take longer.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia informed reporters that Iyer would likely need six to eight weeks to make a full recovery. “He’s in much better condition now, and our medical team is in regular touch with Dr. Rizwan, the Indian team doctor, who has been staying in Sydney to oversee Shreyas’s progress,” Saikia said.
While Iyer has already begun performing some light, normal activities and is said to be out of danger, doctors have advised him to take ample rest and not rush his return to training or competitive matches.
Doubt Over South Africa Series
Iyer’s unfortunate injury casts uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to begin on November 30 in India. The selectors are likely to decide on his inclusion based on his recovery in the coming weeks.
Fans and teammates have flooded social media with prayers and well-wishes for the talented middle-order batter, who has been an integral part of India’s limited-overs setup. Known for his calm temperament and elegant stroke play, Iyer has often played crucial innings for India in pressure situations.
Despite the setback, the cricketing community remains hopeful that Shreyas Iyer will make a strong comeback once he’s fully fit. For now, his focus remains solely on regaining his health and strength.
As he himself said, “Every day is a step forward.”
