Why the Australia series is important for Suryakumar Yadav
The leadership side of Suryakumar Yadav is expected to push him to step up with the bat and make significant contributions when India faces Australia in the first match of IND Vs AUS T20I on Wednesday. It promises to be a closely contested encounter, as both teams have won eight of their last ten T20I matches, suffering just one defeat each. India had one tied game, while Australia had one match washed out due to rain.
Despite the captain’s prolonged poor form causing some concern, the Indian T20 team has been the best among the three national sides, playing almost on autopilot, with new players smoothly adapting to their roles.
Since becoming captain, Suryakumar’s record has been outstanding, with 23 wins out of 29 matches so far, and he has adopted a fearless new approach to cricket, where every batter plays aggressively from the very first ball.
This aggressive mindset, combined with Surya’s leadership, has resulted in an unbeaten bilateral series record and a triumph in the Asia Cup, although against some second-tier continental teams, including Pakistan, who lag behind India in terms of skill, quality, and execution.
The Australia series marks the beginning of India’s real preparation for the T20 World Cup, with 15 matches to find their rhythm.
“Support from the Coach, Pressure on the Captain: Surya Eyes Redemption”
However, the outcome of this series may not have a major impact, as the next ten matches against South Africa and New Zealand will be played in familiar conditions, similar to what they are likely to encounter in the T20 World Cup.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed unwavering support for Suryakumar and believes he not need worry about his recent low scores. Nonetheless, it is time for the captain to let his bat do the talking.

In 2023, Surya scored 733 runs in 18 innings at a strike rate of nearly 156, including two centuries and five half-centuries. In 2024, he scored just under 450 runs at a strike rate of 151. However, in 2025, the Indian skipper managed only 100 runs in 10 innings, averaging just 11 runs per match.
What stands out is his strike rate of over 105, which suggests that even though he has struggled for runs, he has not completely abandoned his aggressive intent.
“I feel I have been working really hard. Not that I wasn’t working hard before. I have had a few good sessions back home, good 2-3 sessions here, so I am in a good space,” The captain said at the pre-series press conference at Manuka Oval.
The captain again emphasized the team goal
“Runs will come eventually, but I’m working hard towards the team goal. It’s more important what the team wants from you in different situations. I take one game at a time, and if it starts, then I think it will be a good thing.”
For a player like Abhishek Sharma, who made a mark in the Asia Cup, dealing with the extra bounce on Australian pitches will be a new challenge, making the captain’s role even more crucial.
Surya’s issue has been his limited range of shots, and he often tries to play behind the square using the pace and bounce of the deliveries.
“Bounce, Battle, and Big Tests: India Brace for Manuka Challenge”
While the bounce on the Manuka Oval pitch gives him a chance to ride it and score well, the presence of Josh Hazlewood and the Test-match lengths around the off-stump will pose significant challenges.
This will not only present new challenges for Abhishek but also revive old questions for the Indian captain, whose critics have consistently pointed out that he hasn’t scored regularly against big teams in recent years.
Speaking of the bowling attack, Jasprit Bumrah’s presence and Varun Chakravarthy’s guile will be crucial if the Indian batters are to post a decent total.
The 12 overs from Varun, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel will be vital, along with Bumrah and Arshdeep’s opening spells, against Travis Head and the dangerous Mitchell Marsh.
All eyes will also be on Australia’s new T20 star, Mitchell Owen, who played for Punjab Kings last year. Owen was impressive against India in a recent ODI in Adelaide, but facing 12 overs of spin bowling will certainly test his hitting abilities.
