“Inside the ‘Pari-War’: What Triggered the Lalu Family Rift After RJD’s Bihar Poll Debacle”

The ‘Pari-War’ Unfolds: Mahagathbandhan (of which RJD was the leader) received a most embarrassing and heavy defeat of all time in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025, whose 75 MPs figure fell to just around 25 seats. With a massive 202 seats bagged by the ruling National Democratic Alliance, Bihar’s political landscape was redrawn instantly, but it also heralded a devastating internal implosion in the state’s most influential political dynasty — that of RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The party could barely reach the 30-seat mark even after propping Tejashwi Yadav as its Chief Minister face in state polls – it was the last straw that broke the camel’s back of the long-standing build-up of tensions for months. What began as private disputes in due course snowballed into a ferocious, bitter public spat – christened The ‘Pari-War’, or Family War in quirky media parlance – that played out theatrically on social media platforms and in the news media, hauling the party’s internal bickering to national notoriety.

The Pari-War

The Revolt: The Public Revolt of Rohini Acharya

Rohini Acharya, the daughter of Lalu Prasad, based in Singapore, is at the heart of the crisis, and she made jolts in the country almost within a day following the announcement of election results by declaring publicly that she is quitting politics and breaking off all ties with her family.

The melodramatic announcement had been one of a series of emotional and explosive tweets in which she had pointed the accusing finger directly at her younger brother, Tejashwi Yadav, and his immediate inner circle of aides, principally of the Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav and their long-time associate Rameez Nemat Khan.

In 2022, Ms Acharya, the person who was once a role model of family loyalty due to having donated a kidney to her father, was accused of being humiliated, subjected to filthy abuses, and even threatened with a slipper in a dispute within the family house, Patna.

In insider reports, the bust-up was on November 15, a day following the crushing outcome. Rohini was going to face Tejashwi on his own, and he made it clear to him that his entire species of electoral failure was due to his own core team-that is, Sanjay Yadav and his network. She was not comfortable with the unrestrained power of these individuals because, in her opinion, in case the entire campaign is run by Tejashwi and his group of selected individuals, they should also be held accountable for the debacle. She gave one of the most personal and outrageous disclosures when she said, “My devotion and sacrifice was hurled upon my face. I had been charged with stealing crores,” and getting the ticket in place of my dirty kidney.

The Bombing: The Public Rebellion of Rohini Acharya

The Rivalry of Control: Tejashwi vs. Coterie
The mere concentration of power by Tejashwi Yadav and the growing strength of his close coterie, headed by Sanjay Yadav, is the root cause of this ‘Pari-War‘. The elders in the family and also the party, such as Rohini, are reported to have felt sidelined and excluded by this group. Sanjay Yadav, the Haryana strategist, is being viewed as a person who is recklessly making decisions of all importance of the party, be it the allocation of tickets or the running of campaigns.

The fact that Rohini Acharya is publicly assaulted is an indicator of the supposed palace coup, in which the interrogation of the ‘Chanakya’ – translated as Sanjay Yadav- is tantamount to being thrown out of the house and being disgraced and abused. Things got even worse when there were allegations against Rameez Nemat Khan, who is a relatively unknown man with quite a controversial background, and got close to Tejashwi as a result of a cricketing relationship. It merely created doubts about the nature of the inner circle that was counselling the leader of the party.

Broadening the Break and the Patriarchal Silence

The crisis got worse when Rohini Acharya’s elder brother, who is now far estranged with RJD and family after he, too, had been expelled, added his voice. Tej Pratap, who had also floated his own political party, Janshakti Janata Dal, entered in full throttle in support of his sister, as he stated that the insult was unacceptable, and that those who had influenced his brother were the Jaichands, which would bring dire consequences, and asked his father to get involved in the matter.

The rift was widened in the days after Rohini would explode when three more of the daughters of Lalu Prasad, Rajlakshmi, Ragini, and Chanda, left the Patna house with their children to join their sister in Delhi, an action that was seen to have symbolized a break with their father.

Although the feud was outrageous and apparent, even Tejashwi Yadav, emotionally, asked RJD MLAs whether he should be part of the party or the family, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi remained utterly silent, which is entirely uncharacteristic of them. This silence has been largely condemned, and opponents have alluded to the fact that the patriarch was playing the role of Dhritarashtra by sitting back and observing the family being divided.

The in-fighting has grossly contributed to the RJD’s loss in elections and has given a long dark cloud to the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav that makes the future of the party and the Yadav political family in general a big question. Pari- War confirms that the RJD ordeal is no longer a political one; it is the war of dominance, existence, and family pride.
